SUBJECT: AFP news article on Nokia’s new offer
DATE: Feb 6, 2010
We were asked to analyze a blog post or news item to help us prepare Proximity's fall survey. Below is my summary of an AFP news article on Nokia offers free map and navigation for any users who have smartphones. I suggest we include questions on the fall survey designed to determine whether TU students are using such services.
What exactly the new offer about
Ovi Map is a free mapping product and service by Nokia for its mobile phones and smartphone multimedia devices. As Mr. Jukka Hosio, director of Nokia’s services marketing said at a press conference in Helsinki that they provided completely free Ovi Map for its users. It includes voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers in 74 countries and in 46 languages. Since the news from Nokia, companies in the global navigation market such as Tom Tom and Garmin have to suffer theirs decline in the GPS market.
Even though Nokia offered a useful service and attracted buyers, we have no idea if it’s enough to stop the decline in its market’s share
Why is the new offer important
Nokia’s new offer was a practical feature plus the fact that it was offered for free will likely attract buyers. By presenting the map and navigation for smartphones at no cost, Nokia caused some impacts to others.
· Nokia is attempting to improve its share in the global phone market where it has lost market share to other competitor’s hands such as Apple’s Iphone and RIM’s BlackBerrry · Share in Tom Tom were down 6.96 percent at 6.14 euros in Amsterdam at 1505 GMT while Garmin dropped 2.72 percent to 35.10 dollars in New York
Besides, according to FIM analyst Michael Schroeder said he supposed Nokia thought it could stop some of the slides it has seen in the smartphone market with this move
Questions to ask TU mobile users
Even though mobile phones are dominant now a day, smartphones are still limited. That is the new offer is still unreachable to many people. Here are some questions for the mobile’s team of the Spring Proximity survey:
· Do you think it is necessary to have a smartphone instead of a regular one? · Do you really take advantage of all the smart functions in your phone? · Do you prefer to have a GPS device or a phone like Nokia offered?
